Godzilla x Kong: Supernova has another intriguing development, with a recently surfaced merchandise image bringing SpaceGodzilla into the spotlight. Reported by SFF Gazette on November 2, the image reportedly shows an unfinished prototype of the monster, featuring his recognisable crystal-covered shoulders and distinctive body structure. While the development does not confirm his appearance in the upcoming film, it has generated fresh speculation about the direction Legendary Pictures could take with the next instalment of its Monsterverse franchise.
The possibility is particularly interesting because SpaceGodzilla had already attracted attention through a Writers Guild of America screenplay listing that included him alongside Godzilla among the characters owned and created by Toho Co., Ltd. The merchandise prototype has now added another development to the discussion, strengthening speculation surrounding the creature’s possible introduction into Legendary’s cinematic universe. Directed by Grant Sputore, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on March 26, 2027.
For audiences unfamiliar with SpaceGodzilla, the character’s story goes back to Toho’s 1994 film Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla. What makes him particularly interesting is that his origins are directly connected to Godzilla’s own genetic material. According to Toho’s official character history, cells containing Godzilla’s DNA, carried into space from the remains of Biollante, pass through a black hole and combine with extraterrestrial crystalline organisms. This unusual combination transforms the material into SpaceGodzilla, a creature that eventually makes its way back to Earth.
This origin gives SpaceGodzilla a distinctive place among Godzilla’s many opponents. Rather than being an entirely unrelated monster, he emerges from material connected to the King of the Monsters himself. The extraterrestrial transformation, however, gives him a completely different appearance and an unusual collection of abilities, making him a formidable threat even by Godzilla’s standards.
The reported merchandise prototype has drawn attention partly because SpaceGodzilla’s physical appearance is central to what distinguishes him from the original monster. Instead of Godzilla’s familiar dorsal plates running down his back, he has enormous crystal formations growing from his shoulders, back and tail. A prominent crystalline horn sits on his forehead, while his bulky body and distinctive tusks further contribute to his unusual design. Toho lists him at 120 metres tall and 80,000 tonnes, making him an enormous opponent even within the franchise’s established collection of giant monsters.
These recognisable features could also make his transition into the Monsterverse particularly interesting from a visual perspective. Legendary’s films have established Godzilla and Kong as two very different kinds of Titans, with their physical characteristics and fighting styles contributing to their identities. SpaceGodzilla would introduce another distinctive design, one built around crystalline structures and an extraterrestrial appearance rather than simply presenting another oversized creature.
His crystals, however, serve a much greater purpose than giving him a distinctive appearance. They collect and absorb energy, allowing SpaceGodzilla to power some of his most dangerous attacks. One of his signature abilities is the Corona Beam, an energy blast fired from his mouth. He can also generate protective force fields and use telekinesis, which allows him to move objects through mental force. His control over gravity and other psychic abilities makes him a particularly unusual opponent, as he does not depend entirely on physical strength when fighting another monster.
Another fascinating aspect of SpaceGodzilla is his ability to change the environment around him. In the original film, he creates enormous crystal formations across the battlefield, using them to establish an energy field that strengthens his powers. This gives him a significant advantage because his surroundings become part of his fighting strategy. Instead of relying solely on direct attacks, he can use the environment to reinforce his abilities and control the battlefield.
However, the crystals also represent a weakness. Damaging the shoulder formations and disrupting the energy field can reduce his strength, giving his opponents an opportunity to challenge him. This combination of formidable abilities and identifiable vulnerabilities makes SpaceGodzilla a particularly interesting opponent, as defeating him requires more than simply matching his physical strength.
Directed by Kensho Yamashita, the 1994 film also features M.O.G.U.E.R.A., a giant robot developed by the human organisation G-Force to combat monsters. SpaceGodzilla faces both Godzilla and the mechanical opponent while also imprisoning Little Godzilla inside a crystal structure. The film remains his first and only live-action theatrical appearance. By the time Supernova reaches cinemas in 2027, 33 years will have passed since his debut, making a potential return to the big screen a notable development for the character.
For Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, SpaceGodzilla could bring a different kind of challenge to the two central Titans. Kong primarily relies on physical strength and weapons, while Godzilla possesses his atomic breath and immense physical power. SpaceGodzilla combines physical strength with energy-based attacks, defensive force fields and the ability to control his surroundings. His powers could introduce a different dimension to the conflicts within the Monsterverse, particularly if the filmmakers choose to explore his extraterrestrial origins.
More importantly, SpaceGodzilla offers an established monster with a distinctive cinematic identity rather than another opponent whose threat comes simply from its size. His connection to Godzilla also provides an existing foundation for a potential rivalry, while his unusual abilities could create new challenges for both Godzilla and Kong.
The latest merchandise development has brought renewed attention to a character whose connection to Godzilla goes much deeper than their similar appearances. However, neither the reported prototype nor the screenplay listing independently confirms that SpaceGodzilla will appear in the finished film. Until Legendary Pictures or the filmmakers make an official announcement, his involvement remains speculative.
If SpaceGodzilla does make his Monsterverse debut, audiences could see one of Toho’s most distinctive creations reimagined for a major Hollywood production. His unusual origin, crystal-powered abilities and direct connection to the King of the Monsters give Godzilla x Kong: Supernova an opportunity to explore a fascinating new chapter in the franchise.
