Prime Video has unveiled the first teaser trailer for The Love Hypothesis, offering fans their first extended look at the highly anticipated adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling romance novel. Starring Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman, the film made its first public appearance during Prime Video’s inaugural Obsessed Fest fan event, held at nya Studios in Los Angeles.
Directed by Claire Scanlon, The Love Hypothesis follows Olive Smith (Lili Reinhart), a brilliant Ph.D. candidate focused on building her future in academia. However, after discovering that her best friend Ahn (Rachel Marsh) has developed feelings for her former crush Jeremy (Nicholas Duvernay), Olive impulsively kisses her intimidating professor, Adam Carlsen (Tom Bateman), to convince everyone she has moved on.
What begins as a spontaneous act soon evolves into a carefully planned fake relationship with its own rules and boundaries. As Olive and Adam spend more time together, the line between pretense and genuine emotion begins to blur, forcing Olive to test what may be her most challenging hypothesis yet—that love could be worth the risk. The teaser recreates one of the novel’s most recognizable moments as Olive unexpectedly kisses Adam while Ahn watches from a distance, echoing the iconic cover artwork of Hazelwood’s book. The trailer then follows the pair as they agree to maintain a fake relationship after realizing their colleagues have witnessed the incident.
“I should kiss you,” Adam tells Olive in one scene. “Your friends—they’re watching from the balcony.”
Remaining faithful to the novel’s STEM backdrop, the teaser also incorporates scientific imagery and narration to mirror the evolving relationship between its protagonists. An educational voiceover explaining how molecules form bonds serves as a recurring metaphor throughout the preview. “Molecules stay in motion, vibrating and colliding until they find a match. And when they do, something miraculous happens. They form a bond. Isn’t science fun?” the narrator says.
Reinhart and Bateman introduced the trailer during Prime Video’s Obsessed Fest, where they reflected on bringing one of BookTok’s most popular romance novels to the screen. The pair also joked about the teaser leaking online ahead of its official debut, encouraging fans in attendance to pretend they had not already seen it.
Bateman also revealed that Hazelwood’s novel remained “always front and center” throughout production as the filmmakers worked to faithfully capture the spirit of the bestselling source material. “We all want to see a lot more love than hate and this is that. I think it’s beautiful and hopefully feels timeless and feels like a movie you can go back and watch with your friends and swoon over,” Reinhart said while discussing the film.
The screenplay has been written by Sarah Rothschild, with Elizabeth Cantillon serving as producer. Alongside Reinhart and Bateman, the cast also includes Rachel Marsh, Nicholas Duvernay, Jaboukie Young-White and Arty Froushan.
Prime Video’s inaugural Obsessed Fest celebrated the streamer’s growing slate of young adult originals, including Every Year After, The Love Hypothesis, Elle, Off Campus, Overcompensating, Your Fault: London, The Last Sunrise and Drawn Together. The one-day event featured exclusive first looks, cast panels, fan activations and appearances from talent behind the platform’s upcoming YA projects.
The Love Hypothesis will begin streaming exclusively on Prime Video on September 23, 2026.
