Prime Video has released The Love Hypothesis trailer, and the first full look at the romantic comedy suggests that Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling romance has made the jump from page to screen with plenty of chemistry intact. Starring Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman, the film will premiere globally on Prime Video on September 23, 2026.
The trailer opens with Olive, played by Reinhart, explaining her situation to the camera as though she is presenting a scientific hypothesis, immediately establishing the tone of Hazelwood’s novel. Olive is a brilliant PhD candidate at a prestigious university who, in a moment of panic, impulsively kisses the intimidating Dr. Adam Carlsen, played by Bateman, to convince her best friend Ahn that she has moved on from a crush. Surprisingly, Adam agrees to continue the pretence.
What begins as a carefully calculated arrangement between two scientists soon becomes something neither of them expected. The trailer features several moments that fans of the novel will recognise, including Olive and Adam’s first kiss, the much-discussed sunscreen scene and a hotel-room sleepover. The fake-relationship setup and the contrast between Olive’s warmth and Adam’s gruff personality have also invited comparisons to The Proposal, the 2009 romantic comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock.
Published in 2021, The Love Hypothesis was Ali Hazelwood’s debut novel and became a New York Times bestseller, spending 10 months on the list. The novel originally began as Star Wars-inspired Reylo fan fiction before Hazelwood reworked it into a standalone romance set within the world of academic science. Its popularity exploded further through BookTok and romance-reading communities, making the film adaptation one of the genre’s more anticipated releases.
The film rights were acquired by Elizabeth Cantillon’s Bisous Pictures in October 2022. Hazelwood has also responded enthusiastically to the trailer, saying she still cannot believe the adaptation is happening and praising the creative team behind it.
The Love Hypothesis is directed by Claire Scanlon, who previously directed Set It Up, the popular 2018 romantic comedy. Sarah Rothschild wrote the screenplay, while Laura Karpman, who also collaborated with Scanlon on Set It Up, composed the score. Elizabeth Cantillon and Jonathan Golfman produce the film for Amazon MGM Studios and MRC.
Reinhart stars as Olive Smith, a PhD candidate determined to secure her future in academia. Bateman plays the formidable Dr. Adam Carlsen, whose intimidating reputation makes Olive’s impulsive kiss all the more unexpected. Reinhart also serves as a producer on the film.
The supporting cast includes Jaboukie Young-White as Malcolm, Rachel Marsh as Ahn, Nicholas Duvernay as Jeremy and Arty Froushan as Tom, alongside Laura Paolillo and Jeananne Goossen.
The film’s teaser debuted at the Obsessed Fest fan event in June 2026, where Reinhart and Bateman introduced it to an enthusiastic audience. The full trailer arrived on August 26. Filming had wrapped in September 2025, with Reinhart marking the occasion in a TikTok clip alongside Bateman that recreated Jim and Michael’s farewell scene from The Office. The clip went viral and gave fans an early glimpse of the chemistry between the two leads.
Now, with the full trailer finally out, fans of Hazelwood’s novel have their clearest look yet at Reinhart and Bateman’s take on Olive and Adam. If the trailer is any indication, the film is leaning into the book’s combination of academic rivalry, fake romance and slow-burning attraction.
The Love Hypothesis premieres globally on Prime Video on September 23, 2026.
