Theo James and Hoyeon’s psychological thriller The Hole will arrive in cinemas on June 25, 2027, with Amazon MGM Studios’ specialty label Orion Pictures handling its theatrical release. Directed by South Korean filmmaker Kim Jee-woon, the film features an international cast that includes Golden Globe winner Christian Slater and Korean actress Yeom Hye-ran. Adapted from Hye-young Pyun’s award-winning Korean novel of the same name, the story follows an injured American professor whose recovery takes a disturbing turn when his mother-in-law begins uncovering secrets about his marriage.

The release date places The Hole on the summer 2027 theatrical calendar, following significant industry interest in the project. At the Cannes Film Festival in 2025, Orion Pictures acquired the film’s worldwide distribution rights in a deal reported to be approaching $20 million. Production has since wrapped in South Korea, bringing the psychological thriller closer to its theatrical debut. The acquisition established an international distribution plan for a story built around grief, suspicion and the uneasy power dynamics within a family facing a devastating loss.

James plays Owen, an American professor living in South Korea whose life changes after a car accident kills his wife, Sandy, played by Hoyeon, and leaves him bedridden. Dependent on his Korean mother-in-law, portrayed by Yeom Hye-ran, for his care and recovery, Owen finds himself in an increasingly unsettling situation as she begins investigating troubling details about his past and his marriage to her daughter. The discovery of these secrets transforms an already painful period of mourning into a tense mystery, with Owen’s physical vulnerability adding another layer of uncertainty to the story.

The narrative moves between Seoul and Berkeley, California, bringing its American and Korean characters into a story shaped by cultural differences and family relationships. The film’s dialogue blends English and Korean, reflecting the backgrounds of its characters. This cross-cultural setting also informs the central relationship between Owen and his mother-in-law, whose growing suspicions complicate the arrangement in which she cares for him. As questions about Owen’s past emerge, the film places grief, dependence and distrust at the centre of its psychological tension.

The Hole is based on Pyun’s 2016 Korean-language bestseller, which won the Shirley Jackson Award for Best Novel for the 2017 award year. The novel’s premise centres on a man left paralysed after a car crash kills his wife, with his mother-in-law subsequently becoming his caregiver. That situation provides the adaptation with a contained but unsettling starting point, placing the characters in close proximity while gradually raising questions about what happened before the accident and what remains hidden within the marriage. Christopher Chen has written the screenplay for the film adaptation.

Kim Jee-woon directs the film, adding another psychological thriller to a filmography that includes I Saw the Devil and Cobweb. The South Korean filmmaker has worked across multiple genres, and The Hole brings his focus to a story driven by a small group of characters and the tension between them. Rather than relying on a large-scale spectacle, the premise centres on the uncertainty surrounding Owen’s past and his dependence on the woman who has begun questioning his history. The unfolding mystery places the characters’ knowledge, motives and relationships at the heart of the suspense.

The cast brings together performers known for work across international film and television. James, whose credits include The Gentlemen, leads the film as Owen, while Hoyeon plays his wife, Sandy. Hoyeon gained international recognition through the Korean survival drama Squid Game and also appeared in Disclaimer. Slater, a Golden Globe winner, joins the ensemble, while Yeom Hye-ran brings her experience from Korean cinema, including No Other Choice. Their varied screen backgrounds reflect the film’s international cast and its combination of American and Korean characters.

With its theatrical release now scheduled, The Hole is moving towards its summer 2027 debut under Orion Pictures. The combination of Pyun’s award-winning source novel, Kim’s direction and a cast led by James and Hoyeon gives the film an international profile. Its story of an injured man, a devastating family loss and a mother-in-law investigating the secrets surrounding her daughter’s marriage places psychological suspense within an intimate domestic setting. The June 25 release date gives audiences a confirmed theatrical window for the adaptation following the distribution deal announced at Cannes in 2025.
