Wagner Moura is in negotiations to join the cast of Warner Bros.’ highly anticipated Ocean’s prequel, adding another acclaimed name to a project that already features Margot Robbie and Bradley Cooper. The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 25, 2027, and continues to gain momentum as one of the studio’s most closely watched upcoming productions.
Moura, who recently earned widespread acclaim for his performance in The Secret Agent and also starred in Alex Garland’s Civil War, is the latest actor being linked to the expanding ensemble. While details about his potential role remain under wraps, his addition would further strengthen a cast led by Robbie and Cooper.
The untitled prequel represents a significant new chapter for the long-running Ocean’s franchise, which was revitalized by Steven Soderbergh’s trilogy starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and an ensemble cast. Warner Bros. has kept story details tightly guarded, with reports indicating that plot specifics remain “locked in the vault.”
Although official details remain scarce, some information about the project emerged earlier this year during CinemaCon. The film is reportedly set around the 1962 Monaco Grand Prix and follows a pair of master thieves planning an ambitious heist. Margot Robbie previously confirmed that the story centers on the parents of Danny Ocean, the character famously portrayed by George Clooney in the modern trilogy.
The project has undergone several creative evolutions since it was first announced. Originally conceived as a prequel starring Robbie and potentially Ryan Gosling, the film later shifted direction as Bradley Cooper became involved. Cooper has since taken on multiple responsibilities, serving as director, writer, producer, and star. His screenplay is expected to offer a fresh take on the franchise while remaining connected to the established Ocean’s universe.
Cooper is producing the film alongside Robbie and LuckyChap Entertainment, the production company led by Tom Ackerley, Josey McNamara, Milan Popelka, and Robbie. LuckyChap has become one of Hollywood’s most successful production banners in recent years, backing projects ranging from Barbie to critically acclaimed independent films.
For Moura, the project would mark another major studio role during a period of growing international recognition. The Brazilian actor first gained worldwide attention through his portrayal of Pablo Escobar in the Netflix series Narcos and has since built a diverse filmography spanning both international and Hollywood productions. His recent work in Civil War and The Secret Agent has further elevated his profile among audiences and industry observers alike.
The casting also continues a trend of assembling high-profile talent around the Ocean’s brand. Since the franchise’s revival in 2001, the series has become known for attracting major stars and ensemble casts. Warner Bros. appears to be maintaining that tradition with the prequel by pairing Robbie and Cooper with an increasingly impressive supporting lineup.
Interest in the project has remained strong despite the studio’s decision to keep story details secret. The combination of Bradley Cooper’s involvement behind and in front of the camera, Margot Robbie’s star power, and the enduring popularity of the Ocean’s franchise has positioned the film as one of Warner Bros.’ key releases for 2027. The June 25 release date places it squarely in the summer blockbuster season, where the studio is expected to market it as a major theatrical event.
For now, Warner Bros. has not officially confirmed Moura’s casting, and negotiations are reportedly ongoing. However, if a deal is finalized, the Oscar nominee would join one of the most high-profile projects currently in development at the studio. With Bradley Cooper steering the film creatively and Margot Robbie continuing her partnership with Warner Bros., the Ocean’s prequel is steadily taking shape ahead of its planned 2027 release.
