Two of Bollywood’s biggest commercial releases entered cinemas with franchise recognition, star power, and solo release windows. While Alpha, the first female-led entry in the YRF Spy Universe, and Welcome to the Jungle, Akshay Kumar’s long-awaited return to the Welcome franchise, both enjoyed respectable opening weekends, their weekday performances revealed a familiar challenge for big-budget Hindi films: audience retention.
Although both films witnessed significant drops after the initial rush, their box office trajectories were not identical. Welcome to the Jungle managed a considerably stronger theatrical run, whereas Alpha lost momentum almost immediately after its opening weekend.
Alpha finished its first week with an India net collection of ₹47.45 crore, an India gross of ₹55.49 crore, and an overseas gross of ₹22.55 crore, taking its worldwide total to ₹79.21 crore after seven days. Against a reported production and prints & advertising (P&A) budget of around ₹125 crore, the film recovered well under half of its reported investment during its opening week.
The film opened with ₹9.25 crore on Friday, grew to ₹11.50 crore on Saturday and ₹13.25 crore on Sunday, finishing its opening weekend at ₹34 crore. However, the momentum disappeared almost immediately. Monday collections dropped sharply to ₹3.85 crore, followed by ₹4.25 crore on Tuesday, ₹2.85 crore on Wednesday, and only ₹2.50 crore on Thursday.
Perhaps the biggest concern is what happened after Sunday. Alpha added just ₹13.45 crore during the entire Monday-to-Thursday period, indicating that audience interest faded rapidly once the opening weekend ended. Early second-week numbers also suggest little recovery, with the film collecting only ₹0.42 crore on its second Friday.
Several factors appear to have contributed to the decline. Mixed-to-negative critical reception, muted audience word of mouth, and sustained negative social media conversation limited the film’s ability to attract repeat viewers. Hrithik Roshan’s much-discussed cameo generated some of the loudest audience reactions, but it was not enough to reverse the overall trend.
Welcome to the Jungle, meanwhile, enjoyed a substantially stronger launch. Including paid previews, the film earned ₹63.75 crore during its extended opening weekend, beginning with ₹3.75 crore in Thursday previews before collecting ₹15.25 crore on Friday, ₹20 crore on Saturday, and ₹24.75 crore on Sunday.
Its first week concluded with a solid ₹93.15 crore India net collection. Worldwide, the film has grossed ₹180.06 crore, including ₹148.61 crore gross in India and ₹31.45 crore overseas, while its India net total stands at ₹125.05 crore after two weeks.
However, despite the stronger overall numbers, Welcome to the Jungle also experienced a noticeable slowdown once the opening weekend ended. Collections dropped to ₹8.50 crore on Monday before settling at ₹9.25 crore on Tuesday, ₹6.15 crore on Wednesday and ₹5.50 crore on Thursday. During its second week, the film earned ₹31.90 crore, with collections steadily declining from ₹4.50 crore on the second Friday to ₹2.15 crore by the second Thursday.
Unlike Alpha, the comedy franchise managed to maintain a healthier post-weekend run. After its opening weekend, Welcome to the Jungle added ₹29.40 crore during the remainder of its first week, more than double the weekday business generated by Alpha. Even though its second week reflected a front-loaded performance, it retained enough momentum to comfortably cross the ₹125 crore India net mark.
The contrast between the two films illustrates an important distinction. Both struggled to sustain their opening-weekend buzz, but Alpha experienced a much sharper collapse, while Welcome to the Jungle converted its stronger opening into a considerably better overall theatrical run.
Both releases also benefited from solo release windows and arrived with established franchise value and recognizable stars. Yet their weekday performances reaffirm a long-standing box office reality: strong openings may generate headlines, but long-term success is determined by audience acceptance after the weekend.
With Dhamaal 4 entering cinemas on July 10 and taking over premium screens, the theatrical prospects for both films have narrowed further. While Welcome to the Jungle will conclude its run with respectable commercial numbers despite being front-loaded, Alpha now faces an uphill battle to recover a meaningful share of its reported production cost.
Ultimately, the performances of both films reinforce the same lesson for Bollywood’s big-budget spectacles. Franchise branding and star power can drive an impressive opening, but only sustained word of mouth can deliver the weekday holds needed for a successful theatrical run.
