Anya Taylor-Joy is officially heading to Middle-earth. The Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee has joined the cast of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, the upcoming fantasy adventure from New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. The film is being directed by Andy Serkis, who is also returning to reprise his iconic role as Gollum. The movie is scheduled to arrive in theaters worldwide on December 17, 2027.

Taylor-Joy will portray Seren, a Sindar Elf of the Woodland Realm who is described as a trusted and lethal agent of King Thranduil. The character is an original addition to the Middle-earth mythology created for the film and is not drawn directly from J.R.R. Tolkien’s writings.

Her casting marks one of the biggest additions to the ensemble as Warner Bros. continues to expand the cast of its highly anticipated return to Middle-earth. Seren’s connection to Thranduil places her within the Woodland Realm, the Elven kingdom previously featured in The Hobbit trilogy.

The film will also bring back several familiar faces from the franchise. Andy Serkis returns as Gollum, while Ian McKellen is set to reprise his role as Gandalf. Elijah Wood will once again play Frodo Baggins, and Lee Pace returns as King Thranduil, the Elven ruler first introduced in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit films.

Taylor-Joy joins an expanding lineup of newcomers that includes Kate Winslet, Jamie Dornan, and Leo Woodall. Winslet is set to play Marigol, a character that marks her first appearance in the Lord of the Rings universe. Jamie Dornan will portray Strider, while Leo Woodall has been cast as Halvard. The additions further strengthen what is quickly becoming one of the most star-studded ensembles assembled for a Middle-earth project outside of Peter Jackson’s original trilogies.

The story is expected to explore the period before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring. The film will center on the hunt for Gollum after Gandalf realizes the importance of the creature’s knowledge regarding the One Ring. Before Sauron’s forces can locate and interrogate him, a mission is launched to track Gollum down, setting the stage for a tense and dangerous pursuit across Middle-earth.

One of the project’s biggest attractions remains Andy Serkis’ expanded role behind the camera. After defining Gollum through his groundbreaking performance-capture work in both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, Serkis is now taking on directing duties while returning as the beloved character. His involvement gives the film a direct creative connection to the franchise’s cinematic legacy.

The production is also being overseen by key figures behind the original trilogy. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Zane Weiner are all attached as producers, ensuring continuity with the creative team that helped bring Tolkien’s world to the big screen more than two decades ago.

The Hunt for Gollum is part of Warner Bros.’ broader efforts to expand its Middle-earth slate. Alongside the upcoming film, another Lord of the Rings project, The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, is currently in development, signaling the studio’s long-term commitment to exploring new stories within Tolkien’s universe.

The role adds another major franchise to an already impressive résumé of Taylor-Joy. The actress has become one of Hollywood’s most sought-after stars thanks to acclaimed performances in projects such as The Queen’s Gambit, The Menu, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and Dune: Part Two. Her addition to The Hunt for Gollum further raises anticipation for the film as production continues to take shape.

With returning franchise veterans, a growing cast of high-profile newcomers, and a story that explores one of the most intriguing untold chapters of Middle-earth history, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated fantasy films of 2027.
