The mystery surrounding Brad Pitt’s follow-up to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is finally over. Netflix has confirmed that the film is officially titled The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth and will receive a two-week IMAX theatrical run before arriving on the streaming platform. The announcement was accompanied by a brief 10-second teaser that flashes the title card before cutting to Pitt’s stuntman behind the wheel.
The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth will play in IMAX cinemas globally for two weeks beginning November 25, 2026, before making its full Netflix debut on December 23. The decision to give the film a dedicated IMAX window is a significant move for Netflix and suggests that the streamer has strong cinematic and commercial ambitions for the sequel. The November theatrical release also places the film squarely within awards season.
The film is set in 1977, eight years after the events of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It follows Cliff Booth as he navigates a Hollywood that has largely moved on without him. The stunt world in which he once thrived has changed, while the industry around him has evolved, leaving Cliff to find his footing in a landscape that no longer quite knows what to do with him. The story is therefore shaped by the passage of time and the melancholy of being left behind.
Quentin Tarantino, who created the character and directed Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, wrote the screenplay for The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth. However, he has chosen not to direct the sequel himself.
Tarantino explained his decision on the Church of Tarantino podcast last year, saying he loved the script but felt he was “still walking down the same ground” he had already covered. He subsequently handed directing duties to David Fincher, whose filmography includes Fight Club, Zodiac, The Social Network and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Fincher’s visual precision and ability to build tension make him an intriguing choice to take over Tarantino’s world.
Brad Pitt returns as Cliff Booth, the role that earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Pitt is also producing the film alongside Ceán Chaffin, Fincher’s longtime producing partner. The supporting cast includes Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Peter Weller.
The only line of dialogue from Cliff heard so far appeared in a brief teaser that aired during February’s Super Bowl: “I don’t possess many talents, but I know better than to get in the way of a good story.”
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was released in 2019 and grossed $377 million worldwide. The nearly three-hour period film received 10 Academy Award nominations and won two Oscars, including Pitt’s first acting Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. The film has since become one of the defining titles of its decade.
The sequel now returns to that world with the original character and star, a screenplay by Tarantino and a new director behind the camera. That combination makes The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth one of the more intriguing upcoming Hollywood projects.
Whether the Netflix sequel can generate the same cultural impact as its theatrical predecessor remains to be seen. But with Fincher directing, Pitt returning as Cliff Booth and Netflix giving the film a two-week global IMAX run, the sequel is clearly being positioned as a major cinematic event.
