Netflix has set November 18, 2026 as the global release date for Guarding Stars, its holiday romantic comedy starring Leighton Meester and Jared Padalecki. The film is based on Katherine Center’s bestselling 2022 novel The Bodyguard and is directed by Elizabeth Allen Rosenbaum, who previously helmed Netflix’s Purple Hearts.
The story follows a no-nonsense bodyguard who is assigned to protect a charming action star over the holidays. As the two spend more time together, professional boundaries begin to blur, with sparks flying and secrets complicating their Christmas plans. Netflix describes the film as a fresh take on the familiar bodyguard-romance setup.
Leighton Meester stars as the highly capable bodyguard, while Jared Padalecki plays the movie star she is tasked with protecting. The pairing brings together two actors with strong television followings, with Leighton Meester known for Gossip Girl and Jared Padalecki for Supernatural and Walker.
The film’s title is a deliberate change from Center’s novel, which was published as The Bodyguard in 2022. The movie could not retain that title without immediately inviting comparisons with the famous 1992 romantic thriller The Bodyguard, starring Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston. Netflix and the filmmakers ultimately adopted Guarding Stars after fans and readers of Center’s book became involved in the title discussion.
Center’s novel centers on Hannah Brooks, a professional bodyguard who is assigned to protect Jack Stapleton, a famous actor. The job becomes more complicated when Jack wants to keep a security threat hidden from his family, forcing Hannah to pose as his girlfriend. The resulting fake-romance arrangement gradually develops into something more genuine.
For the film, the story has been moved into the Christmas season, giving the adaptation a more overtly festive setting. Rosenbaum has previously said that the enthusiasm surrounding Center’s novel among readers and on BookTok was an important factor in her decision to direct the movie. She also highlighted the opportunity to bring the book’s bodyguard-and-movie-star romance into the holiday season.
The cast also includes Andie MacDowell, country singer Walker Hayes, Noah LaLonde, Toby Sandeman, Rachael Ancheril, Phil Brooks, Ava Max and Shaun Johnston. Walker Hayes makes his acting debut with the film, while Brooks better known as professional wrestler CM Punk adds another recognizable name to the ensemble.
Rosenbaum directs from a screenplay credited to Erin Cardillo, Richard Keith, Gina Matthews and Grant Scharbo. Matthews and Scharbo produce through Little Engine Productions, while Jared and Genevieve Padalecki produce through Living in the Asterisk.
Guarding Stars also fits into Netflix’s broader push toward what the streamer calls its “comfort storytelling” slate. Netflix recently highlighted its growing collection of heartland, romance and
feel-good titles, specifically announcing Guarding Stars as part of that strategy. The streamer is positioning the film as a holiday romance built around relatable characters, a strong sense of home and a familiar romantic-comedy setup.
The movie is among Netflix’s fall 2026 releases and is now scheduled to premiere globally on November 18, 2026, just ahead of the peak Christmas movie viewing season.
