John Leguizamo, Inde Navarrette and James Ortiz are among the Latino and Hispanic artists set to be honored at the Critics Choice Celebración of Cinema & Television on October 2 at the Four Seasons Los Angeles at Beverly Hills. Announced by the Critics Choice Association, the awards recognize standout work both onscreen and behind the scenes, bringing together a veteran actor, a breakout film performer and an artist whose work has helped redefine how a major screen character is created.
John Leguizamo will receive the Career Achievement Award, recognizing more than four decades of work across film, television, comedy and theatre. The Colombian-born actor’s career has included Carlito’s Way, Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge!, the Ice Age films and When They See Us. The honour also arrives as Leguizamo appears in Christopher Nolan’s Universal Pictures epic The Odyssey, connecting the award to his current work as well as his decades-long career.
The ceremony will also spotlight a newer generation of performers. Inde Navarrette will receive the Breakthrough Actress Award – Film for her role as Nikki in Focus Features’ Obsession. The recognition follows the commercial success of the horror film, which had reached $495.5 million worldwide when the Critics Choice Association announced the honour. Navarrette is being recognized as her performance becomes associated with one of the year’s most successful original films.
James Ortiz, meanwhile, will receive the Innovator Award for Project Hail Mary. A master puppeteer of Puerto Rican descent, Ortiz helped bring the alien character Rocky to the screen through a combination of performance, puppetry and voice work opposite Ryan Gosling. The award broadens the ceremony’s focus beyond traditional acting categories, recognizing creative artists whose physical and technical performances can be central to a film’s storytelling while remaining less visible to audiences.
That range is central to the purpose of Celebración. The annual Critics Choice Association event honours achievements from the Latino and Hispanic entertainment community across film and television, including both onscreen and offscreen work. This year’s ceremony will also recognize Judy Reyes with the Trailblazer Award and Oscar Nuñez with the Vanguard Award, while Rodrigo Teixeira, Javier Calvo, Javier Ambrossi, Aimee Carrero, Beth de Araújo and Laysla De Oliveira are among the additional honourees.
Several of those selections connect the awards to current projects rather than simply celebrating established careers. Rodrigo Teixeira will receive the Producer Award for Paper Tiger, while Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi will receive the Director Award for La Bola Negra. Beth de Araújo is being recognized with the Breakthrough Director Award for Josephine. Aimee Carrero and Laysla De Oliveira are also being honoured for their television work in Your Friends & Neighbors and Lioness, respectively.
The list reflects the breadth of contemporary Latino and Hispanic achievement, bringing performers, filmmakers, producers, directors and other artists working across different areas of the entertainment industry together at the October event. Critics Choice Association member and Celebración co-programmer Clayton Davis is set to host alongside association member Amanda Salas.
For Leguizamo, Navarrette and Ortiz, the three honours represent distinct stages and forms of a career. One recognizes a body of work built over decades, another marks a major breakthrough at the centre of a recent box-office success, and the third highlights an innovative contribution to a large-scale studio production.
That combination reflects the broader purpose of this year’s Celebración. Rather than focusing on a single definition of success, the ceremony places established careers, emerging talent and behind-the-scenes innovation on the same stage, highlighting the breadth of Latino and Hispanic work shaping film and television today.
