The Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (HKIFFS) has appointed veteran film executive Fred Tsui as its new Executive Director, entrusting the founder and CEO of Moebius Entertainment with leading one of Asia’s most influential film organizations into its next chapter. Tsui will officially assume the role on September 23, succeeding Albert Lee, and will report to HKIFFS Chairman Dr. Wilfred Wong and the Society’s Board of Directors.
In his new position, Tsui will oversee the Society’s entire portfolio of initiatives, including the Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF), the Hong Kong – Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) and its HAF Film Lab, the Summer International Film Festival, and the year-round HKIFF Cine Fan programme. Together, these events have helped establish Hong Kong as one of Asia’s leading hubs for international cinema, film financing and talent development.
Tsui brings more than three decades of experience spanning international sales, distribution, co-productions, film financing, exhibition and broadcasting. He founded Moebius Entertainment in 2022, building the company into an international sales outfit representing Asian cinema, with recent titles including Happily Ever After and Big Little Things. Before launching Moebius, he spent more than 20 years at Media Asia Film, where he served in senior leadership roles overseeing international sales and co-productions. Earlier in his career, he also held executive positions at PCCW and Asia Television (ATV).
Beyond his executive career, Tsui is widely respected across the global festival circuit. He has worked as a film critic, producer, festival programmer and juror, serving on juries at major international festivals including Edinburgh, Sitges, Tallinn Black Nights, Seattle, Udine and Jecheon. He is also a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), serves on the Hong Kong Film Development Council, and previously sat on the boards of the Independent Film & Television Alliance (IFTA) and MIA International Audiovisual Market in Rome.
Announcing the appointment, HKIFFS Chairman Dr. Wilfred Wong praised Tsui’s extensive international relationships and long-standing contribution to the film industry, describing him as an executive who has consistently helped connect Hong Kong cinema with the global marketplace. Wong said Tsui’s broad industry experience and international perspective make him well positioned to guide the Society through its next phase of growth.
Tsui said he was honoured to take on the role, noting that he has experienced film festivals from multiple perspectives throughout his career—as a sales executive, producer, critic, juror and audience member. He added that he looks forward to strengthening the Society’s international reach, supporting emerging filmmakers and building on HKIFFS’s longstanding legacy of championing Asian and world cinema.
Founded in 1976, the Hong Kong International Film Festival is one of Asia’s oldest and most prestigious film festivals, screening hundreds of films from around the world each year while serving as a major platform for new talent and international co-productions. With Tsui taking over leadership later this year, HKIFFS is placing one of Hong Kong’s most internationally connected film executives at the helm of an organization that continues to play a central role in the region’s cinematic landscape.
