Gina Rodriguez and Justin Baldoni are working together again, this time on a project that is deeply personal for both of them. Baldoni has signed on to produce House of Guerrero, Rodriguez’s theatrical directorial debut, a boxing film she co-wrote and has been developing for years. The announcement was confirmed by Deadline on September 14.
House of Guerrero follows a young fighter whose promising boxing career is cut short before he gets one final opportunity to step back into the ring and fight for the life he thought he had lost forever. Written by Rodriguez and screenwriter Bernardo Cubría, the film is described by Wayfarer Studios as a boxing film for a new generation, offering a fresh perspective on the genre while centering a community that has long shaped the sport but has rarely been placed at the heart of its own story.
Rodriguez has spoken openly about what the project represents to her. She said directing the film marks the beginning of a new chapter in a story she has carried throughout her life. Having boxed since childhood, she sees the film as an opportunity to explore what the sport can teach about life.
For Rodriguez, the opportunity to make her directorial debut in California, surrounded by what she described as an extraordinary cast and crew, is both emotional and humbling. She has also connected the film to Latino representation, saying she feels a responsibility to tell a story about Latino families, communities and heroes with honesty, heart and pride.
Justin Baldoni and his partner Andrew Calof are producing through Wayfarer Studios, the production company Baldoni founded. Rodriguez is also producing through her banner I Can and I Will Productions alongside Molly Breeskin.
The reunion between Rodriguez and Baldoni carries a history that stretches back five years. The two worked together on The CW’s Jane the Virgin, the dramedy series in which Rodriguez played Jane Villanueva and Baldoni directed. That experience has become the foundation for their collaboration on House of Guerrero.
Baldoni said his decision to produce the film was shaped by his years working with Rodriguez. He described having a close view of her work both in front of and behind the camera, while highlighting her connection to boxing and her commitment to stories centred on Latino characters and experiences.
Rodriguez has already gained behind-the-camera experience by directing several episodes of Jane the Virgin. She has also spoken over the years about her ambitions as a filmmaker and her interest in telling stories centred on Latino families and communities with complexity and humanity. House of Guerrero now represents the next step in that progression.
The film’s boxing setting and Rodriguez’s personal connection to the sport are central to its identity. At the same time, its focus on a Latino community that has helped shape boxing gives the project a broader cultural dimension. Wayfarer’s description of the film and Rodriguez’s comments indicate that representation will remain an important part of its storytelling approach.
House of Guerrero is currently in active development. No cast beyond the creative team, production start date or release date has been confirmed.
