Cocktail 2 Tops India Box Office, While Main Vaapas Aaunga Emerges Weekend's Biggest Surprise
June 22, 2026

The Indian box office witnessed a mix of strong debuts, surprise performers, and sharp declines this weekend, with Cocktail 2 emerging as the highest-grossing film across the country. However, despite topping the charts with ₹47.2 crore net, the Shahid Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, and Kriti Sanon starrer fell short of the kind of opening many in the trade had expected from a reportedly ₹150 crore production.

Meanwhile, Main Vaapas Aaunga delivered one of the strongest second-weekend performances of the year, while Malayalam drama Balan: The Boy and Telugu film Maa Inti Bangaaram posted encouraging starts in their respective markets.

Directed by Homi Adajania, Cocktail 2 debuted with ₹47.2 crore net during its opening weekend, comfortably securing the top position at the Indian box office. However, the opening has generated mixed reactions within trade circles. Given its reported ₹150 crore budget and star-studded cast featuring Shahid Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, and Kriti Sanon, expectations were considerably higher. The film’s advance booking was also softer than anticipated heading into release. The film remains heavily dependent on weekday collections and word-of-mouth if it hopes to justify its large-scale theatrical expectations.

Telugu film Maa Inti Bangaaram emerged as the second-highest-grossing release of the weekend with an estimated ₹23 crore net opening. Headlined by Samantha Ruth Prabhu and directed by B. V. Nandini Reddy, the film benefited from strong interest across Telugu-speaking markets and delivered one of the better regional openings of recent weeks.

The biggest surprise of the weekend came from Main Vaapas Aaunga. The Hindi film collected an estimated ₹12 crore net in its second weekend, more than double its opening weekend figure of ₹5.5 crore. Even more impressively, the film’s second weekend almost matched its entire first-week collection of ₹12.25 crore. Such growth is rare in today’s theatrical landscape and suggests exceptionally strong word-of-mouth among audiences.

Among new releases, Malayalam drama Balan: The Boy delivered one of the most encouraging openings.Directed by Chidambaram, the critically acclaimed film collected approximately ₹7.17 crore net during its opening weekend. Positive reviews and strong audience reception helped the film register healthy growth through the weekend, positioning it as a potential sleeper success.

Ram Charan’s Peddi added approximately ₹6.4 crore net during its third weekend. The pan-India sports drama has now collected around ₹234 crore net in India. While those figures would be impressive for most films, the final tally is likely to fall below expectations for a large-scale Ram Charan vehicle mounted on a reported mega budget. The film is now entering the final phase of its theatrical run.

Hollywood horror sensation Obsession remained one of the strongest performers in the market, collecting an estimated ₹5.5 crore net in its fourth weekend. The film’s total India net collections have now crossed ₹77 crore, making it one of the biggest international horror successes in India this year.

Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5 collected around ₹5 crore net during its opening weekend in India. The film arrives on the back of a massive $160 million domestic debut and a $312 million worldwide opening weekend, making it one of the biggest global launches of the year. Family audiences are expected to drive collections in the coming weeks.

Tamil release Nooru Saami opened to an estimated ₹3.5 crore net during its first weekend, while Marathi film Ghabadkund collected approximately ₹2.4 crore net. Both films delivered respectable starts within their target markets and will now rely on weekday holds to extend their theatrical runs. After a strong opening week, Haunted 3D: Echoes of the Past witnessed a significant decline.

The Vikram Bhatt-directed horror film collected just ₹1.5 crore net during the weekend. The film had opened to more than ₹9 crore in its first weekend and crossed ₹15 crore during its first week, making the drop particularly steep. Nevertheless, the film remains one of the better-performing Hindi horror releases of recent months.
