Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story 5 has stormed the global box office with a franchise-record opening weekend, collecting an impressive $160 million domestically and $312 million worldwide to deliver the biggest debut of 2026.

The animated sequel exceeded already lofty expectations and secured the second-largest opening weekend ever for an animated film in North America, trailing only Pixar’s Incredibles 2, which debuted with $182.7 million in 2018.

The film also surpassed Super Mario Galaxy Movie‘s $131.7 million debut to claim the biggest domestic opening of the year and set a new benchmark for the Toy Story franchise, overtaking Toy Story 4‘s $120.9 million launch from 2019.

Toy Story 5 Delivers One of Pixar’s Biggest Openings Ever

The fifth installment opened across 4,425 theaters and was powered by a strong $17.5 million preview haul and a massive $71 million opening day, including previews. The Friday figure came within touching distance of Incredibles 2‘s all-time animated first-day record of $71.2 million.

Internationally, the film added $152 million, resulting in a global launch of $312 million. That marks the second-biggest worldwide opening for a Pixar title behind only Inside Out 2‘s $384 million debut.

Audience reception has been equally strong. The film earned an “A” CinemaScore and holds a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Disney’s extensive marketing campaign, including Taylor Swift’s chart-topping original song I Knew It, I Know You, helped keep the film firmly in the cultural conversation heading into release.

The opening is another major victory for Pixar, which has enjoyed a strong rebound in 2026 following the success of original animated feature Hoppers earlier this year.

Disclosure Day Faces Sharp Second-Weekend Decline

Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi thriller Disclosure Day landed in second place with $17 million, falling 62% from its debut weekend.

The film has now grossed $78.2 million domestically and $160 million worldwide after two weekends in theaters. While not a disastrous result, the steep decline suggests the film may struggle to attract audiences beyond its core demographic.

With a reported production budget of $115 million, trade estimates suggest the film may need around $300 million worldwide to reach profitability.

Obsession Continues Remarkable Box Office Run

One of the biggest stories of the summer remains Focus Features’ horror sensation Obsession.

Now in its sixth weekend, the Curry Barker-directed horror film added another $14.2 million, declining just 25% from the previous frame. The film has now reached $215.8 million domestically and an impressive $333 million worldwide.

Produced on a modest budget, Obsession has become one of the most profitable films of the year and continues to demonstrate the strength of original horror at the box office.

Backrooms Becomes A24’s Biggest Movie Ever

A24’s Backrooms also continued its extraordinary run, earning $7.3 million in its fourth weekend.

The found-footage horror adaptation has now grossed $175.1 million domestically and $301 million worldwide, officially becoming the highest-grossing film in A24’s history.

Directed by Kane Parsons, the film has emerged as one of the year’s breakout successes and further highlights the growing influence of Gen-Z filmmakers in the theatrical marketplace.

Scary Movie Crosses $200 Million Worldwide

Paramount’s Scary Movie rounded out the top five with $6.7 million, bringing its domestic total to $97.5 million.

Worldwide, the horror-comedy sequel has now crossed $201.9 million. Given its reported $30 million production budget, the film has already become another highly profitable entry in the long-running franchise.

Masters of the Universe and Mandalorian Continue to Struggle

Amazon MGM’s Masters of the Universe added $5.6 million in its third weekend for a domestic total of $56.9 million and $101.9 million worldwide.

Against a reported $200 million production budget, the film is shaping up to be one of the year’s biggest theatrical disappointments.

Disney’s Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu fared somewhat better, collecting $3.9 million in its fifth weekend. The film has now earned $171.7 million domestically and more than $320 million worldwide. However, the numbers remain below expectations for a major theatrical return for the Star Wars franchise.

New Releases Make Modest Starts

Among the weekend’s newcomers, Neon’s supernatural horror film Leviticus debuted with $2.7 million from 1,076 theaters.

A24’s Hugh Jackman-led The Death of Robin Hood opened just behind it with $2.6 million from 1,782 locations. Mixed reviews and a weak C+ CinemaScore suggest the film could face an uphill battle in the coming weeks.

Summer Box Office Gets a Major Boost

The success of Toy Story 5 arrives at an important moment for the theatrical industry. Summer box office revenues are now running roughly 15% ahead of last year and have nearly caught up with pre-pandemic levels.

With major releases such as Supergirl, Minions & Monsters, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day still to come, exhibitors are hoping the strong momentum generated by Toy Story 5 will continue throughout the remainder of the summer season.

For now, however, the spotlight belongs to Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and Jessie. With a $160 million domestic opening and a $312 million global debut, Toy Story 5 has delivered exactly the kind of blockbuster performance Disney and Pixar needed—and has firmly established itself as one of the year’s biggest theatrical events.
