Two Pianos (Deux pianos)

Two Pianos (French: Deux pianos) is a 2025 French romantic drama directed by Arnaud Desplechin. Produced by Arte France Cinéma in co-production with Why Not Productions, the film stars François Civil as Mathias Vogler, a virtuoso French pianist returning from Asia to his hometown of Lyon, where he becomes entangled in an impossible love story. Nadia Tereszkiewicz plays Claude, a central figure in Mathias’s emotional journey, while Charlotte Rampling portrays Elena, adding depth and gravitas to the narrative. Hippolyte Girardot rounds out the main cast in a supporting role.

The story follows Mathias as he navigates personal and professional challenges, confronting the unresolved emotions and missed opportunities of his past. Development for Two Pianos began in September 2024, when Arte France Cinéma and Why Not Productions announced the project, initially under the working title Une affaire. By June 2025, the title was finalized as Deux pianos. The production emphasizes a realistic portrayal of Lyon, with filming locations including the Parilly train station and the streets of Vieux Lyon. Principal photography began on October 18, 2024, and concluded in December 2024.

Two Pianos had its world premiere in the Gala Presentations section of the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, 2025, receiving attention for its elegant storytelling and nuanced performances. The film was also selected for the competition lineup at the 73rd San Sebastián International Film Festival and will screen in the non-competitive ‘Grand public’ section at the 20th Rome Film Festival in October 2025.

The film is scheduled for theatrical release in France on October 15, 2025, via Le Pacte. With its combination of romance, drama, and the captivating world of classical music, Two Pianos offers audiences a heartfelt exploration of passion, regret, and the transformative power of love, all set against the picturesque backdrop of Lyon.
