Produced as a dark reimagining of the Robin Hood legend, the American thriller is based on the 17th-century ballad Robin Hood’s Death.

The Death of Robin Hood follows an aging Robin Hood confronting the consequences of his violent past after suffering a critical injury. Removed from the mythic image traditionally associated with the outlaw hero, the film presents a more grounded and psychologically driven interpretation of the legendary character during the final stage of his life.

The story centers on Robin Hood while he is under the care of a mysterious woman named Sister Brigid. Isolated and physically weakened, he is forced to reflect on years shaped by crime, rebellion and killing. As memories and unresolved tensions resurface, the narrative examines themes of guilt, mortality, redemption and the fading legacy of a once-feared outlaw.

Hugh Jackman stars as Robin Hood, portraying the character as an older and emotionally burdened figure. Jodie Comer appears as Sister Brigid, while Bill Skarsgård portrays Little John, Robin Hood’s longtime companion. The ensemble cast also includes Murray Bartlett as The Leper and Noah Jupe as Arthur / Godwyn.

Directed by Michael Sarnoski, known for Pig and A Quiet Place: Day One, the film approaches the Robin Hood mythology through a darker and more intimate lens. Rather than focusing on large-scale adventure storytelling, the project emphasizes psychological tension and character-driven drama within a medieval setting.

Principal photography began in Northern Ireland in February 2025, with filming taking place at Belfast Harbour Studios as well as locations including Silent Valley, Glenarm and Murlough Bay. The production was shot on 35mm film, contributing to its grounded visual texture and period atmosphere.

Produced with A24 backing the U.S. release, The Death of Robin Hood continues the studio’s focus on filmmaker-driven reinterpretations of established genres and myths.

The film is scheduled to premiere at the Sydney Film Festival on 12 June 2026 before its theatrical release in the United States on 19 June 2026.
