Ranveer Singh’s Pralay Could Become One of Bollywood’s Most Ambitious Genre Films Yet

June 24, 2026

While speculation around Don 3 continues to dominate headlines, another project appears to be quietly gaining momentum in the background. Ranveer Singh’s long-discussed post-apocalyptic thriller Pralay is reportedly moving steadily through development and could become one of the most ambitious genre films attempted in Hindi cinema. At a time when Bollywood rarely ventures into large-scale dystopian storytelling, the project is already generating curiosity for its scale, genre, and creative ambitions.
Recent reports surrounding the film gained fresh attention after Ranveer Singh was spotted visiting filmmaker Hansal Mehta’s office in Mumbai. While neither the actor nor the makers have officially announced a production schedule, Pralay is widely reported to be one of Singh’s upcoming projects following the success of the Dhurandhar franchise.
What makes Pralay particularly intriguing is its reported scale and genre. According to filmmaker Hansal Mehta, the project is set in a post-apocalyptic world and aims to deliver something Indian audiences have rarely seen on screen.
“It’s a post-apocalyptic world that hasn’t been attempted before at this scale in India,” Mehta said while discussing the film’s development.
The filmmaker’s comments have generated significant interest because large-scale post-apocalyptic cinema remains a relatively unexplored space in Indian filmmaking. While films such as Go Goa Gone and Zombie Reddy successfully introduced zombie horror to Indian audiences, very few productions have attempted to create an expansive dystopian world on the scale typically associated with major international genre spectacles.
The film is being developed under True Story LLP, the production company founded by Hansal Mehta and Sahil Saigal. The project is reportedly being directed by Jai Mehta, Hansal’s son and a filmmaker who first gained industry attention through his work on Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story before going on to direct the acclaimed series Lootere. If the project moves forward as planned, Pralay would represent the most ambitious undertaking of his career so far.
According to Hansal Mehta, the origins of the project can be traced back to Jai’s long-standing interest in the concept.
“Jai had been working on this idea for a long time,” Mehta revealed. “When Ranveer saw his directorial work, he was impressed. Then Jai pitched the idea to him. Once Ranveer said he liked the idea, we invested in developing it—helping Jai create the world he wants to present in the film. Ranveer’s conviction and commitment towards both the script and Jai has enabled Pralay.”
The filmmaker has also addressed one of the biggest rumours surrounding the project. Reports had previously suggested that Pralay might be inspired by José Saramago’s acclaimed novel Blindness, but Mehta has publicly denied those claims.
“It’s not an adaptation,” Mehta said, confirming that Jai Mehta and writer Vishal Kapoor developed the story as an original project.
That originality may ultimately become one of the film’s biggest selling points. At a time when franchises, remakes, sequels, and adaptations dominate theatrical schedules, Pralay is reportedly being conceived as an original large-scale genre film built around a completely new world and mythology.
The production team is also said to be assembling international talent to help realize the project’s ambitious vision. Hansal Mehta has spoken about the extensive world-building required to create a believable post-apocalyptic environment and revealed that the team is working with experienced international collaborators while attempting to maintain production efficiency.
“The victory of Jai’s film will depend on its immersive nature,” Mehta explained. “How do you make a post-apocalyptic, dystopian world believable? To that end, we are working with some of the best talent from around the world. And we are trying to achieve it at a fraction of the cost in which Hollywood would have done it.”
That statement perhaps offers the clearest indication yet of the filmmakers’ ambitions. Rather than simply creating another horror or thriller film, the team appears to be attempting a fully realized dystopian world that can stand alongside international genre productions.
For Ranveer Singh, Pralay would represent another bold genre shift in a career defined by experimentation and risk-taking choices. The actor has moved between historical dramas, commercial entertainers, action spectacles, and character-driven films throughout his career. A post-apocalyptic survival thriller would add another distinctive chapter to his filmography.
At present, the project remains in development, and details regarding the supporting cast, budget, production timeline, and release plans have yet to be officially announced. However, with the filmmakers openly discussing the scale of their ambitions and reports suggesting steady progress behind the scenes, Pralay is already emerging as one of the most intriguing Hindi film projects currently in the works.
If the team succeeds in delivering the world they envision, Pralay could become more than just Ranveer Singh’s next film. It has the potential to become one of the most ambitious post-apocalyptic projects ever attempted in Indian cinema and a significant test case for whether large-scale dystopian genre storytelling can find mainstream success with Indian audiences.
