The Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2026 have announced the winners, celebrating a new group of emerging filmmakers from around the world. The annual awards program, established by Creo and sponsored by Sony, honored outstanding talent across five categories during a gala ceremony held at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, California.
This year’s winners emerged from a highly competitive field that attracted more than 8,400 submissions from 162 countries and territories, underscoring the global reach and growing reputation of the awards. From those thousands of entries, a shortlist of 30 films representing more than 20 countries advanced to the final stage, where they were evaluated by an industry jury comprising filmmakers, producers, and executives.
Among the major winners, Jack Hughes of the United Kingdom claimed the Fiction category award for *Deadheading*. The film follows a determined wife who resorts to unusual measures in an effort to secure her terminally ill husband’s dream allotment garden. In the Non-Fiction category, Singaporean filmmaker Christine Seow was recognized for *Two Travelling Aunties*, a documentary about two women in their fifties who choose to leave conventional expectations behind and embrace life on the open road.
The Animation category was won by Michelle Brøndum and Ida Melum for *Ovary-Acting*, a distinctive and unconventional story that explores questions of motherhood and personal choice through a highly imaginative premise. In the Student category, Ana A. Alpizar, representing New York University, received top honors for *Norheimsund*, which tells the story of a young Cuban woman whose hopes for a better future become increasingly complicated as reality begins to challenge her expectations.
The fifth category, Future Format, was awarded to Nigerian filmmaker Innocent Yama Lamido for *Creating Without Permission*. The category encourages filmmakers to experiment with new forms of storytelling and respond to technical creative challenges, highlighting innovative approaches to visual narrative in a rapidly evolving media landscape.
Beyond the recognition itself, the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards are designed to provide meaningful opportunities for career development. Winners and shortlisted filmmakers participated in a four-day immersive program at Sony Pictures Studios, where they attended workshops, screenings, and masterclasses led by industry professionals and Sony Pictures executives. The program covered a wide range of filmmaking disciplines, including cinematography, animation, documentary filmmaking, screenwriting, global acquisitions marketing, and the use of emerging technologies in storytelling.
In addition to the educational experience, winners also received cash prizes and Sony Digital Imaging equipment, giving them practical resources to support future creative projects. The winners were selected by a distinguished jury led by director Justin Chadwick, whose credits include *Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom* and *The Other Boleyn Girl*. Joining him on the panel were filmmaker Will Gluck, producer Rachel O’Connor, and animation director Adam Rosette.
