Supergirl (2026)

Supergirl — Release Date: 26 June 2026. Directed by Craig Gillespie, starring Milly Alcock alongside Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Corenswet and Jason Momoa. Written by Ana Nogueira and produced by James Gunn and Peter Safran for DC Studios, the American superhero film is based on the DC Comics character Supergirl and forms part of the DC Universe’s “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.”

Inspired by the comic series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, Supergirl follows Kara Zor-El as she journeys across the galaxy during her 23rd birthday celebration alongside her super-powered dog Krypto. During her travels, she encounters Ruthye Marye Knoll, a young girl seeking vengeance after the murder of her father. The meeting sets Kara on a violent interstellar mission tied to revenge, justice and personal reckoning.

The film presents a version of Kara Zor-El shaped by trauma and isolation. Unlike Superman, who was raised on Earth, Kara spent her early life witnessing the destruction of Krypton and the deaths surrounding her, giving the character a more hardened and emotionally conflicted perspective. James Gunn and Craig Gillespie have both described the interpretation of Supergirl as antiheroic in tone.

Milly Alcock stars as Kara Zor-El / Supergirl, with Eve Ridley portraying Ruthye Marye Knoll. Matthias Schoenaerts plays Krem of the Yellow Hills, the leader of a criminal group known as the Brigands. Jason Momoa appears as the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo, while David Corenswet reprises his role as Superman from the broader DC Universe continuity. The cast also includes Emily Beecham and David Krumholtz as Supergirl’s Kryptonian parents Alura In-Ze and Zor-El.

Directed by Craig Gillespie, the film is structured as a large-scale science-fiction road movie set across multiple planets and civilizations. The production combines emotional character drama with expansive interstellar settings, drawing inspiration from films such as The Fifth Element, Logan and True Grit.

Principal photography took place in England and Scotland between January and May 2025 using IMAX cameras. Supergirl is scheduled for theatrical release in the United States on 26 June 2026 by Warner Bros. Pictures.
