Alex Aster Shares New Update on Lightlark Movie Adaptation

Alex Aster Gives New Update on Lightlark Movie
August 22, 2026

Alex Aster has shared a fresh update on the upcoming film adaptation of her bestselling fantasy novel Lightlark. The author revealed that she has read the screenplay for the Universal Pictures project, remains attached as an executive producer and occasionally shares fan-casting suggestions with the film’s producers. The update comes as Aster also enters a new phase of her career with Barbie: Dreamscape, Mattel’s first original young-adult novel.

The Lightlark update came while Aster was discussing Barbie: Dreamscape, her latest project with Mattel. The book is officially described as Mattel’s first original YA novel and represents a new direction for the Barbie brand.

For readers who know Aster primarily through Lightlark, the interview provided a welcome update on the long-awaited screen adaptation. The film is being developed by Universal Pictures, with Temple Hill involved in production, while Aster is attached as an executive producer.

Aster said she has already read the screenplay and is pleased with the work being done on the project. However, she is not taking over the writing of the film herself. Her primary focus remains writing books, while the filmmakers and screenwriters are responsible for developing the screenplay and other elements of the movie.

Her involvement does extend beyond simply holding an executive producer credit. One of the more interesting details from her comments concerns the fan-casting discussions surrounding Lightlark. The fantasy novel has developed a passionate online following, with readers regularly discussing which actors they would like to see playing its characters.

Aster pays attention to those conversations and said she sometimes sends fan-casting ideas to the producers. She believes readers can come up with smart suggestions, creating an unusual connection between the author, her audience and a film that remains in development.

However, no actors have been officially announced for Lightlark at this stage. The film has also not started filming and does not yet have a confirmed release date. Aster’s latest comments therefore represent an update on her involvement and the screenplay rather than confirmation that the production has entered filming or casting.

Lightlark is not the only Aster novel currently moving toward a film adaptation. Her book Summer in the City is also planned as a movie at New Line Cinema, with Aster again attached as an executive producer. That means two of her stories are currently being developed for the screen.

At the same time, Aster is expanding her work with the Barbie brand through Barbie: Dreamscape. The story follows a teenage Barbie whose future changes unexpectedly when she is declared “Fateless” at graduation. She then sets out through magical lands to discover what her future really holds.

The project is particularly notable because Barbie: Dreamscape is not another adaptation of an existing Barbie story. It is Mattel’s first original young-adult novel, giving Aster the opportunity to bring her own storytelling approach to one of the world’s best-known entertainment brands.

Aster has also discussed the possibility of Barbie: Dreamscape eventually reaching the screen. She said she could imagine the story working as an animated film and is also interested in what readers might suggest for a potential live-action YA adaptation. For now, however, no film adaptation of Dreamscape has been announced.

For Lightlark, the latest update is therefore relatively straightforward but significant. Aster has read the screenplay, remains involved as an executive producer and is communicating with the producers, including occasionally passing along fan-casting ideas. The project has not yet reached the stage of official casting or filming.

With Lightlark and Summer in the City both moving toward the screen, while Barbie: Dreamscape introduces Aster to a major new publishing property, the author is now seeing multiple parts of her work develop beyond the page. For Lightlark fans, the latest comments offer a clearer picture of the film’s current status while leaving the major questions — including casting, filming and release timing — still to be answered.
