Dwayne Johnson is taking on a role unlike anything he has done before. He is set to star in and produce Free Byrd, a drama about a Las Vegas motorcycle stuntman who hides a dementia diagnosis from everyone around him, including his own brother, as he attempts one last death-defying jump. The film is directed by Greg Kwedar and is being made through Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s production company, Artists Equity. The announcement was made on July 7.

Free Byrd follows a Las Vegas motorcycle stuntman who receives a dementia diagnosis and chooses to keep it completely hidden from his family, his colleagues, and his mechanic brother, who is closest to him. Rather than stopping, he doubles down and risks everything on one final jump. The film is described as a story that examines the mind’s vast mysteries and explores the power and beauty of asking for help before it is too late. It is a story about pride, fear, love, and what it means to face your own limitations at the moment you feel most alive.

Dwayne Johnson was very open about why he said yes to this project. In his statement, he said that Free Byrd is a gift in many ways, symbolic of life’s sacred beauty as well as life’s harsh and callous reality. He added that the subject matter has become deeply personal to both himself and director Greg Kwedar as they have started unpacking the journey together. It is the kind of language Johnson does not usually use when talking about a film, and it tells you how differently he is approaching this one.

Greg Kwedar is one of the most respected filmmakers working in independent cinema right now. He directed Sing Sing in 2024, a powerful drama about imprisoned men that earned widespread critical acclaim and was one of the most talked-about films of that year. He also directed Train Dreams, the recent adaptation of the Denis Johnson novella. Kwedar also wrote the current script for Free Byrd. The screenplay went through earlier drafts, but the original script was by Jon Boyer, and a subsequent draft came from Michael Schwartz and Tyler Nilson, the writer-directors behind The Peanut Butter Falcon, before Kwedar came on board and did a full rewrite.

Greg Kwedar spoke warmly about the collaboration in his own statement, saying that Dwayne Johnson brings an open heart and a genuine hunger to explore the full spectrum of human experience, qualities he said are exactly what Free Byrd needs at its centre. He added that the story demands a performer who can hold tremendous strength and profound vulnerability at the same time, and that Johnson is that person.

Free Byrd is being produced through Artists Equity, the production company founded by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. Both spoke about the project in a joint statement, saying that Greg Kwedar is one of the most exciting writer-directors working today and that Dwayne Johnson is an extraordinary talent and person. They added that they are extremely excited that the two of them chose to make the film with their company and that they look forward to sharing it with audiences.

What makes Free Byrd particularly meaningful is the context of where Johnson is in his career right now. He has been actively stepping away from big blockbuster roles and moving toward more character-driven, emotionally grounded work. His recent film The Smashing Machine, directed by Benny Safdie, saw him play real-life MMA fighter Mark Kerr, a role that required vulnerability and depth rather than spectacle. That film was a clear signal of the direction he wants to go. Upcoming projects include the live-action Moana and Jumanji: Open World, as well as another Benny Safdie film called Lizard Music. But Free Byrd feels like the clearest statement yet of what kind of actor Johnson wants to be known as going forward.

The film is being produced by Gill Netter alongside Johnson for Seven Bucks Productions, and Greg Kwedar and Clint Bentley for their company, Ethos. Fifth Season is also on board as a producer. No release date has been announced yet.
