As Atenea struggles to adapt to her new circumstances, her fear of being replaced and forgotten begins to shape her actions in increasingly troubling ways. The narrative unfolds through a blend of psychological tension, fantasy-infused imagery, and emotional drama, examining the anxieties of adolescence through a symbolic and imaginative lens.

Maria Schwinning leads the film as Atenea, portraying a young protagonist navigating a complex emotional transition. Iria del Río and Roger Casamajor appear in key supporting roles connected to Atenea’s new life and the relationships that define her journey. The film centers on themes of family, acceptance, self-discovery, and the challenges of moving from childhood into adulthood, while incorporating fantasy elements that reflect the character’s inner fears and desires.

Director Bàrbara Farré makes her feature debut after building a reputation through short-form and television work. Her approach combines intimate character drama with visual storytelling inspired by folklore and fantasy traditions. Rather than presenting a conventional coming-of-age narrative, the film explores emotional transformation through symbolic imagery and a heightened cinematic atmosphere.

The screenplay was developed by Farré and Alberto Dexeus, while cinematographer Lucas Casanovas captured the film using the ARRI Alexa 35 camera system and premium Leica and Angénieux lenses. The production was supported by several Spanish audiovisual partners, including 3Cat, Filmin, and Movistar Plus+, reflecting the project’s significance within contemporary Spanish cinema.

Premiering in competition at the 2026 Málaga Film Festival, Bad Beast represents a blend of fantasy and drama that examines adolescence through a distinctly European storytelling perspective. The film is scheduled for theatrical release in Spain on 31 July 2026.
