Fjord — Release Date: 19 August 2026 (France). Inspired by the real-life Bodnariu family case, the film explores the complex intersection of family, faith, cultural identity, and state authority in contemporary Norway. Following its world premiere in the main competition at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, Fjord won the Palme d’Or, FIPRESCI Prize, François Chalais Prize, Prize of the Ecumenical Jury, and Prix de la Citoyenneté, establishing itself as one of the year’s most acclaimed international films.

Set in a remote Norwegian village, the story follows Mihai Gheorghiu, a Romanian father, and his Norwegian wife Lisbet, who relocate with their children to Lisbet’s hometown in search of a quieter life. Their hopes for a fresh beginning are shattered when Norwegian child welfare authorities begin investigating allegations concerning the family’s treatment of their children. As the legal inquiry intensifies, the Gheorghius find themselves at the center of public scrutiny, facing a judicial system that challenges their values, parenting, and cultural beliefs. While struggling to keep their family together, they confront difficult questions about parental rights, religious freedom, immigration, and the limits of state intervention. Inspired by true events, the film examines how a society built on ideals of openness and tolerance can also marginalize those whose beliefs differ from the majority.

Sebastian Stan delivers the central performance as Mihai Gheorghiu, opposite Renate Reinsve as Lisbet Gheorghiu. The supporting cast includes Lisa Carlehed as neighbor Mia Halberg, Markus Tønseth as school principal Mats Halberg, Ellen Dorrit Petersen, Lisa Loven Kongsli, Henrikke Lund-Olsen, and child actors Vanessa Ceban and Jonathan Ciprian Breazu, portraying members of the Gheorghiu family and the surrounding Norwegian community.

Director Cristian Mungiu, known for his morally complex social dramas, presents an intimate legal thriller that explores justice, identity, family, and institutional power without reducing the conflict to simple answers. Filmed amid the dramatic landscapes of Hjørundfjorden, Norway, the production combines naturalistic performances with restrained visual storytelling. The score by Danish composer Kaspar Kaae complements the film’s emotional and reflective tone.

The film is scheduled for its main theatrical release in France on 19 August 2026, followed by releases in other international territories, including the United States.
