The Sheep Detectives

The Sheep Detectives — Release Date: May 8, 2026. Directed by Kyle Balda and written by Craig Mazin, the film is based on the 2005 novel Three Bags Full by Leonie Swann. Produced as a mystery comedy with live-action and voice performances, the ensemble cast includes Hugh Jackman, Emma Thompson, Nicholas Braun, Nicholas Galitzine, Molly Gordon, and Hong Chau, alongside an extensive voice cast.

Set in the English countryside, the story begins when shepherd George Hardy (Jackman) is found dead under mysterious circumstances. While local authorities treat the case as routine, an unexpected group of observers takes matters into its own hooves: George’s flock of sheep. Having spent years listening to their shepherd read aloud mystery novels, the sheep apply their knowledge of detective fiction to investigate his death.

Led by Lily, a perceptive Shetland sheep voiced by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, the flock attempts to interpret human behavior, analyze clues, and identify potential suspects among the villagers. Their inquiry unfolds parallel to the official investigation conducted by a well-meaning but clumsy police officer (Braun) and complicated by the involvement of a lawyer (Thompson) and a curious reporter (Galitzine).

The sheep’s perspective offers a humorous reinterpretation of human routines, miscommunications, and motives. As they piece together fragments of overheard conversations and observed interactions, the narrative blends classic whodunit structure with character-driven comedy. Voice performances from Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, Brett Goldstein, and Rhys Darby contribute to the distinct personalities within the flock.

Principal photography took place across Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Oxfordshire, and Surrey, with additional studio work at Shepperton Studios. Visual effects were completed by Framestore, integrating expressive animal performances with live-action environments.

Combining countryside mystery, ensemble comedy, and a novel narrative viewpoint, The Sheep Detectives presents a lighthearted investigative tale centered on loyalty, observation, and the unexpected intelligence of its woolly protagonists.
