Set in 14th-century England, the story chronicles the widespread rebellion that erupted against the rule of King Richard II following years of heavy taxation, economic hardship, and growing social inequality. At the center of the uprising is Wat Tyler, an ordinary man who emerges as the leader of a nationwide revolt demanding justice and greater rights for common people. Alongside radical priest John Ball, Tyler inspires thousands of peasants, laborers, and craftsmen to challenge the authority of the English Crown. As tensions escalate into open conflict, the movement threatens the foundations of the kingdom, leading to a decisive confrontation that would leave a lasting mark on English history. Through its depiction of courage, sacrifice, and political unrest, the film explores the human cost of rebellion against entrenched power.

Andrew Garfield leads the cast as the unnamed Ploughman, a character inspired by Wat Tyler’s movement, while Jamie Bell portrays the influential preacher John Ball. Woody Norman appears as King Richard II, with Katherine Waterston playing Joan of Kent, the king’s mother. The ensemble cast also includes Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Cosmo Jarvis, Thomasin McKenzie, Jonny Lee Miller, Stanley Townsend, and Sky Yang, portraying figures from both the royal court and the rebellion.

Director Paul Greengrass, known for combining historical events with immersive filmmaking, brings his signature realistic style to the medieval period. Principal photography took place across Germany, including Penzing Studios, Nuremberg, Lichtenau Fortress, and the Franconian Open-Air Museum, with thousands of extras employed to recreate the scale of the historic revolt. The production underwent several changes during development, including title revisions and casting updates, before Andrew Garfield assumed the lead role.

Blending historical drama, political conflict, and epic action, The Uprising examines themes of justice, inequality, leadership, and resistance through one of England’s defining medieval rebellions. The film is scheduled for theatrical release in the United Kingdom and the United States on 11 September 2026.
